The Neville Co-☮p

The Neville Cooperative is a student-run community of 22 active, diverse, and awesome individuals living in the same building just off-campus. It's a meeting-place for members of the CMU community, a network of students working to make the world a better place, each in their own way.
But it's more than just a neat living space for active students. The Co-op community is bigger than the building itself, encompassing anyone who wants to come hang out or be a part of the Co-op. The new Co-op external mailing list provides information about Co-op events.

MISSION AND FOUNDATIONAL VALUES

The Co-op was founded in 2003 on the values of democracy; sustainability; and equality of race, gender, and sexual orientation. Members hold weekly democratic meetings to run the Co-op, recycle and compost, and are generally quite accepting people.

OTHER VALUES

Individual members often feel strongly about other issues besides the Co-op core values, such as social justice, politics, animal rights, CMU newspapers, and their spiritual path to name a few. Historically, members of the Co-op have been involved in a large number of student organizations and activities, including:
  • Activities Board (events on campus)
  • Allies (GLBT human rights)
  • College Democrats
  • InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
  • Intramural Basketball
  • National Society of Black Engineers
  • readme (fake news)
  • Society of Women Engineers
  • SPIRIT (African-American awareness)
  • Student Government (running campus)
  • Sustainable Earth (environment)
  • The Tartan (newspaper)
  • Thought (undergraduate research journal)
  • Voices For Animals (animal rights)
  • WRCT (radio)
  • and various bands/orchestras/musical groups.

EVENTS

Other than the weekly meeting, the members meet for weekly dinners and just generally hang out. Moreover, any member of the Co-op can host an event, with budget provided by the Co-op. Some of the fun events we've had this year are several movie nights, a game night, two open mic nights (one of which was hosted in conjunction with Amnesty International), a buttonmaking event, an ongoing repaint-the-basement project, many invitations to come-eat-delicious-baked-goods-I-made, several fabulous parties, at least one Co-oper's birthday party, and so on. In the future, some members hope to do more events based around the Co-op's values, and more events that involve the community. But they still like events that are simply fun!
